What is Leatherette and why do we like using is at Missys?
Today we will be discussing the fabric, Leatherette/Faux leather we have used in the latest range of our funky dangle earrings we are making here at Missys.
Mel is the principal maker of these earrings at Missys and she finds the leatherette easy to work with and is always experimenting with new shapes. Her new range, 'Leatherette Trio Earrings' feature a triple layer of leatherette leaf shapes with matching colours, attached to a round wooden disc with push through studs. Absolutely stunning!
What is Leatherette aka Faux Leather?
'an artificial material that is made to look like leather'
There are two types of material that can be used to make Leatherette. A vinyl (PVC) and polyurethane. As opposed to real leather, they aren't made from animal products which may be a problem for some people.
Polyurethane-based leatherette, which is used to make jewellery/accessories, is made by coating natural fabrics such as cotton or wool with a polymer-based substance, then treating it to look like real leather. It is more breathable than vinyl based and is used more for clothing and items that will come in contact with your skin.
It can be dyed with different colours and prints and our earring range offers many options to mix and match with your different outfits.
Do you find some dangle earrings too heavy? Leatherette is lightweight which can take that 'drag' or 'pull' that sometimes occurs on your earlobes.
It is relatively easy to keep clean with a damp cloth and it is quite durable and waterproof.
We also have two types of earring attachments. A single hook that loops through the ear and our new design using a round wooden disc and push through studs that has proved to be very popular.
Our bows and bow clip sets are also made from leatherette and are always a favourite with our customers because of the variety of patterns available and they are easy to maintain.
